Top 10 MROs in Europe - 2020

Despite durable engines and long-lasting aircrafts, airlines spend more on maintenance compared to crew and fuel. This is because maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) is a significant contributor to aircraft operating costs. Notably, today, aircraft operators are embracing innovative technologies for faster troubleshooting, better task planning, and automated aircraft inspection to reduce downtime and optimise parts management.

The typical visual inspections of commercial aircraft can take more than six hours. Therefore, MROs are utilising drones and robots that can reduce this time drastically while providing greater accuracy of checks, reducing maintenance costs and improving safety, and freeing up engineers’ time. Besides, miniature, cockroach-size camera robots, deployed in “swarms,” are helping inspect the insides of an engine with difficult-to-access components. MRO solution providers are also making use of augmented reality (AR)-powered smart glasses to simplify the complex process of aircraft wire installation, resulting in a 25 percent reduction in production time and lowered error rates. The AR system even allows kitting of 3D drawings based on wire installation plans, which are provided to the end user that are spatially aligned to an aircraft on a wearable device.

Besides, today, big data analytics is playing a significant role in assisting the aviation sector. As the aircraft engine uses 5000 sensors that generate 10GB data per second, it must be analysed correctly and stored efficiently. In this regard, big data analytics is becoming a practical option, capable of implementing predictive maintenance and balancing supply chain demand. On the other hand, AI is being leveraged by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), MRO providers, and suppliers in order to facilitate better customer communications.

At this juncture, there is a wide variety of MRO solution providers are entering the industry with a set of advanced and integrated solutions and services offerings. To help companies navigate through the best-of-breed MRO solution and service providers, Aerospace and Defense Review has compiled a list of “Top 10 MROs in Europe – 2020.” The enlisted organisations are transforming the MRO operations and processes at the intersection of various disruptive technologies. Besides, the magazine also comprises insights from thought leaders in the sector on the industry trends, best practices, recent innovations, and their advice for the aspiring CIOs.
